Summary
The Fee Paying Student Visa is for students paying international tuition themselves or through family, a loan, or partial-scholarship support. The reviewed Immigration New Zealand guidance covers an approved-provider offer, tuition and living funds, insurance, health and character, travel, visa duration, family applications, and work rights that depend on the individual visa conditions.

Eligibility and scope
Applicants need an offer of place from an approved education provider and must show tuition and living-cost support or qualifying alternatives. The visa page also describes insurance, health, character, and online-application requirements. Partners and dependent children cannot be included in the same application, though they may apply for visas based on their relationship to the student.
On 2026-07-15, the page displayed a maximum stay of four years, fees from NZD$850, and an 80% processing estimate of eight weeks. Duration depends on paid study and passport validity, while fees and estimates can change.
Upfront police certificates
INZ announced on 2026-07-01 that, when a police certificate is required for a student or other temporary-visa application, it must generally be uploaded at lodgement. A missing required certificate may lead to refusal or a shorter visa, and INZ will not usually request it after lodgement. The requirement is case-dependent, and the announcement describes distinct handling for some countries and for onshore versus offshore applicants.
Financial support
For tertiary, English-language, and other non-compulsory study, the reviewed funds page displayed NZD1,667 per month for study shorter than one year. For school years 1–13, it displayed NZD1,417 per month.
Applicants must also show outward-travel capacity. Funds must be verifiable and genuinely available and may come from the student, an acceptable sponsor, or a guarantor or third party. Prepaid accommodation, maternity costs, and the funding arrangement can change the required evidence.
Conditional work rights
A student may be allowed to work part-time for up to 25 hours per week and full-time during specified breaks, depending on course eligibility and the conditions recorded on the eVisa or visa letter. Work conditions can only be granted from age 16, and additional rules apply by study level and category.
Announced post-study changes
INZ has announced a six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa and expanded Post Study Work Visa eligibility for certain Level 7 graduate-diploma holders from 2026-11-16. These options were not yet effective on the 2026-07-17 access date, and INZ said further details would be published closer to launch. Study choices may affect later eligibility, but this announcement must not be treated as a presently available visa category.
